Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption Names McGladrey One of America’s Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces
CHICAGO — (September 10, 2012) – McGladrey LLP, the nation's fifth largest provider of assurance, tax and consulting services, was ranked No. 91 on the 2012 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces List released by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption on September 10.
Each year, the Foundation announces America's top 100 adoption-friendly employers, the top 10 by size, and the leaders in each industry, from its annual survey of U.S. employers. Rankings are determined by an analysis of companies' adoption benefits, including the maximum amount of financial reimbursement and paid leave provided to families who adopt. The top 100 are featured in the September issue of Employee Benefit News, a SourceMedia publication that is the leading source of information for benefits decision-makers.
McGladrey offers employees reimbursement for up to $5,000 for adoption-related expenses, and provides up to six weeks of paid time off for adoptive parents. In addition to traditional adoption benefits, the firm offers New Parent Coaching, Coach-on-Call and Employee Assistance programs to help employees and their families adjust to adoption and other major life changes.
"At McGladrey, our employees take great pride in understanding our clients' needs, and we work hard to understand our employees' needs – both personally and professionally - so they can provide the best possible service to our clients," said Katie Lamkin, national human resources leader for McGladrey. "We are honored to receive this prestigious recognition once again, and are pleased to be able to support our employees with benefits that are of high value to them."
Organizations of every size and industry offer adoption benefits. Employers who applied for the list offer their employees an average of $6,800 for adoption-related expenses, and four weeks of paid leave. (Financial reimbursement ranges between $500 and $25,300, and one to 18 weeks of paid leave. Unpaid leave for adoption, beyond what is required by the Family and Medical Leave Act [FMLA], ranges from one week to three years.)
The Wendy's Company is No. 1 on this year's list, with a combination of up to $25,300 in adoption assistance and up to six weeks of paid adoption leave. (Editor's note: The Foundation is not an affiliate of The Wendy's Company.) The full list can be found on the Dave Thomas Foundation website.
Adoption benefits are one of the easiest benefit policies a company can offer and are becoming increasingly popular. In Aon Hewitt's annual survey of 1,000 major U.S. employers, only 12 percent offered a financial adoption benefit in 1990. This year, 56 percent of employers reported offering financial adoption benefits.
There are more than 100,000 children in the U.S. foster care system waiting to be adopted. Every year, nearly 30,000 children in foster care turn 18 and leave the system without families to call their own. The release of the sixth annual Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces List helps the Foundation increase foster care adoption awareness, while celebrating those businesses that support adoptive families.
