This past spring, McGladrey asked leaders of U.S.-based manufacturing and wholesale distribution enterprises about the current state of their companies and industry and their strategies for the coming year. This year’s report includes the responses of 1,061 executives and managers on current business conditions, growth strategies, innovation, cost management, technology initiatives, operations, globalization and more.

After weathering the Great Recession, manufacturers and distributors are cautiously optimistic about the future, but the actual rate of recovery varies considerably among the industry segments. And companies taking advantage of certain strategies are faring better than their peers. This year’s report answers:

  • Which industries have recovered and which are still struggling?
  • How have business conditions changed in the past year?
  • What growth strategies are companies focusing on?
  • What are the top challenges presented by innovation?
  • What is the outlook for operational costs such as raw materials, labor benefits and energy?
  • How are global business strategies helping or hindering?
  • Are capital expenditures back on track and how are investments being funded?
  • What strategy, offering immediate bottom-line benefits, do half of manufacturing and wholesale distribution companies continue to overlook?
  • What is the outlook for hiring, and which skilled positions are in demand by manufacturers and wholesale distributors?
