Meaningful Use: The Final Rule for Stage One of EHR Incentive Funding

Enacted last year, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act provides an incentive funding program for up to $27 billion in Medicare and Medicaid payments over the next 10 years. Those funds are meant to foster the adoption and meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs).

In July 2010, a final rule was released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, providing clarity around what must be done to achieve and meet the requirements for Stage One meaningful use of EHRs, as well as guidance for what to expect in subsequent stages.
