ICD 9 to ICD 10: Mitigate Your Risks

Are you ready for ICD 10?

The International Classification for Disease 10 (ICD 10) coding structure will replace ICD 9 on October 1, 2013. This is a fundamental change for the health care industry and has executives asking how they can effectively mitigate their risks

McGladrey’s New ICD 9 to 10 Translator
After extensive research with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and in-depth analysis, McGladrey consultants developed a discovery engine that identifies a health care organization’s operational and financial flows, effects and risks resulting from the transition to ICD 10. Using the QlikView business intelligence platform, known for its ease of use and data visualization capabilities, the ICD 9 to 10 Translator (Translator) features a collaborative environment that enables providers, administrators and coders to explore the impact of ICD 10 on their current base of business.

To better understand the benefits of the Translator, McGladrey teamed up with a client— an early adopter — and presented at the HIMSS Revenue Cycle Summit, which focused on ICD 10 risk and efficiencies. The summit explored various aspects of ICD 10, and during our session, Ontario Hospital described the effect of ICD 10 on the hospital during their presentation, An Approach to the ICD 10 Transition. The presentation is available on the HIMSS website.

ICD 9 to 10 Translator Features

  • Discovery: The Translator assists hospitals, providers and other health care organizations in understanding what the transition to ICD 10 will mean to them. The application is designed to educate, assess, inform and analyze both the financial and operational effects of transitioning to the ICD 10 coding structure.
  • Benchmarking: The Translator contains baseline analytics to evaluate the impact of ICD 10 on hospitals, clinics, service lines, departments and physicians. Using QlikTech’s business intelligence product, QlikView, you can develop your own customized analytics.
  • Business Intelligence: Because the Translator is a business intelligence application, you have an unlimited ability to analyze and examine data, extending the value of your initial investment well beyond the ICD 9 to 10 transition.
